Guest blog from Ferne Animal Sanctuary
Ferne Animal Sanctuary was founded over eighty years ago when Nina, Duchess of Hamilton and Brandon realised that service men and women going away to war wouldn’t have anyone to look after their animals. She put a call out on the BBC offering refuge to animals and they came in their droves.
Fast forward to the present day and we continue to take in animals from across the South West and beyond and either provide a home for life here at the Sanctuary or find new loving forever homes.
We currently provide refuge for over 400 farm animals and domestic pets who need somewhere safe to go for the remainder of their lives. We also rehome over 500 cats and dogs each year.
As we find ourselves in a second lockdown, once again our charity shops, gift shop and the Sanctuary are closed to visitors.
We are allowed to re-home animals but only on welfare grounds. So, to make sure the dogs get plenty of human contact they are spending some time in the offices. The ones in Reception enjoy helping themselves to new toys or treats from the shelves when the staff aren’t looking.
The Sanctuary is very peaceful and we are taking the opportunity to do essential maintenance work which can be more difficult with visitors present.
However, what we don’t have is funds coming in! If you would like to help us at this difficult time, there are lots of ways you can show your support.
- Become a Friend of Ferne, pets offer us unquestioning friendship, and it is sad when they are abandoned by their owners. By becoming a Friend of Ferne you can return some of that friendship. Set up a regular donation to ensure that we are always there for every animal that needs us.
- Visit our online shop, we have some lovely Christmas cards and lots of gift ideas.
- Give the gift of Sponsorship, choose one of our fabulous animals to sponsor, they come in all shapes and sizes – there’s Isabella the donkey, Walter the goat, Ollie the ferret and so many more! It’s the perfect gift for the person who has everything! Your sponsorship will help us feed, look after and provide further enrichment for our much-loved residents.
- Give a donation in lieu of Christmas Cards and we will email you a personalised Christmas certificate to forward to your nearest and dearest saying you have donated on their behalf.
We are very much looking forward to opening our gates again and hope to be able to welcome you back soon. In the meantime, we hope you stay safe and well. You can keep up to date with all our news by visiting our website at www.ferneanimalsanctuary.org
